Error is not a typo. Israel’s terror has been America’s error.
I’ve never been much of a fan of conspiracy theories, though most raise questions that should be answered.
In 2003, I questioned both the official story of 9/11 and several of the conspiracy theories advanced at the time. My concern then was who benefited from 9/11? My conclusion? Israel.
“The real evidence of who the terrorists are comes from several studies done on the roles played by Israel from its beginning through six decades to 9/11 and beyond.”
In January 2010, I repeated the fact that without 9/11, the US had no excuse for invading Afghanistan. That made George W. Bush’s “war on terror” with Afghanistan and Iraq (with Iran in his gun sights) even more irrelevant.
The battle against Al-Qaeda and bin Laden was the precursor to the invasion of Iraq; and the trumped up connection between Iraq and Al-Qaeda provided one excuse for invading Iraq.
In an article entitled “9/11 revisited”, I summarized 21 questions raised by David Ray Griffin’s book, The New Pearl Harbour Revisited. In that work, Griffin pointed out unequivocally that virtually every dimension of the official account of 9/11 was false beyond reasonable doubt.
Ever since G.W. Bush proclaimed America’s “war on terror” we’ve had reason to question the veracity of many of the wars that have engaged America.
The real evidence of who the terrorists are comes from several studies done on the roles played by Israel from its beginning through six decades to 9/11 and beyond.
A video clip from a British-made documentary from 2002 titled “The age of terror” examines the bombing of the King David Hotel in Jerusalem on 22 July 1946 by Zionists.
“The King David Hotel bombing was an act of terrorism widely-considered to be the first real incidence of 20th century terrorism.”
The south wing of the hotel, then occupied by British civil-military authorities, was bombed, killing 91 people. Twenty-eight of the victims were British, 41 Arab, while 17 were Jewish.
The Zionists who carried-out the attack, known as the Irgun, were led by a future prime minister of Israel, Menachem Begin. The King David Hotel bombing was an act of terrorism widely-considered to be the first real incidence of 20th century terrorism.
Since that time, Zionists, with the complicit intelligence gathering and plots of Mossad, have engaged in more terrorist acts against Israel’s perceived enemies than those committed by the world’s celebrated terrorists combined.
In January of this year, Washington DC-based investigative journalist, author and reputed syndicated columnist Wayne Madsen made a revelation that completely discredited the official story of 9/11.
Madsen revealed that “British intelligence reported in February 2002 that the Israeli Mossad ran the Arab hijacker cells that were later blamed by the US government’s 9/11 Commission for carrying out the aerial attacks on the World Trade Centre and Pentagon. WMR [Wayne Madsen Report] has received details of the British intelligence report which was suppressed by the government of then-Prime Minister Tony Blair.”

It now appears that Netanyahu, in his zeal, blew Mossad’s cover as the masterminds of 9/11.”
It’s now well established that neo-cons in the Bush administration and Israel-firsters, including William Kristol, Richard Perle, Ari Fleischer, Paul Wolfowitz, Elliott Abrams, Douglas Feith, were responsible for getting America into war with Iraq.
Now, a decade after invading Afghanistan and continuing the costly game of protection for Israel in the Middle East, America is on the verge of bankruptcy.

She describes what she found as racism– but, more than that, a racism that prepares young Israelis for their compulsory military service. She said that within Israel, “I only see the path to fascism. You have 5.5 million Palestinians controlled by Israel who live in a horrible apartheid with no civil and no human rights. And you have the other half who are Jews who are also losing their rights by the minute,” she says, in reference to a series of attempts to restrict Israelis’ right to protest and criticise their government. She dismisses the Israeli left as always small and timid, but especially now. “There has never been a real left in this country.” She believes that the education system helps to perpetuate an unjust, undemocratic and unsustainable state. “Everything they do, from kindergarten to 12th grade, they are fed in all kinds of ways, through literature and songs and holidays and recreation, with these chauvinistic patriotic notions.”

“People don’t really know what their children are reading in textbooks,” she said. “One question that bothers many people is how do you explain the cruel behaviour of Israeli soldiers towards Palestinians, an indifference to human suffering, the inflicting of suffering. People ask how can these nice Jewish boys and girls become monsters once they put on a uniform. I think the major reason for that is education. So I wanted to see how school books represent Palestinians.”
In “hundreds and hundreds” of books, she claims she did not find one photograph that depicted an Arab as a “normal person”. The most important finding in the books she studied – all authorised by the ministry of education – concerned the historical narrative of events in 1948, the year in which Israel fought a war to establish itself as an independent state, and hundreds of thousands of Palestinians fled the ensuing conflict.
The killing of Palestinians is depicted as something that was necessary for the survival of the nascent Jewish state, she claims. “It’s not that the massacres are denied, they are represented in Israeli school books as something that in the long run was good for the Jewish state. For example, Deir Yassin [a pre-1948 Palestinian village close to Jerusalem] was a terrible slaughter by Israeli soldiers. In school books they tell you that this massacre initiated the massive flight of Arabs from Israel and enabled the establishment of a Jewish state with a Jewish majority. So it was for the best. Maybe it was unfortunate, but in the long run the consequences for us were good.”
Children, she says, grow up to serve in the army and internalise the message that Palestinians are “people whose life is dispensable with impunity. And not only that, but people whose number has to be diminished.”
Peled-Elhanan approaches her subject from a radical political background. She is the daughter of a famous general, Matti Peled, who became convinced that Israel’s future lay in a dignified peace with the Palestinians. After leaving the army, he became active in the peace movement.
The family produced a poster, calling for a peaceful settlement to the conflict, featuring Peled-Elhanan’s only daughter, Smadar. It’s message was that all children deserve a better future.
Then, in 1997, Smadar was killed by a Palestinian suicide bomber while shopping in Jerusalem. She was 13. Peled-Elhanan declines to talk about her daughter’s death apart from once or twice referring to “the tragedy”.
At the time, she said that it would strengthen her belief that, without a settlement to the conflict and peaceful coexistence with Palestinians, more children would die. “Terrorist attacks like this are the direct consequence of the oppression, slavery, humiliation and state of siege imposed on the Palestinians,” she told TV reporters in the aftermath of Smadar’s death.
Her radical views have exacted a professional cost. “University professors stopped inviting me to conferences. And when I do speak, the most common reaction is, ‘you are anti-Zionist’.” Anybody who challenges the dominant narrative in today’s Israel, she says, is similarly accused.
She hopes her book will be published in Hebrew, but is resigned to it being dismissed by many in the political mainstream.
Asked if Palestinian school books also reflect a certain dogma, Peled-Elhanan claims that they distinguish between Zionists and Jews. “They make this distinction all the time. They are against Zionists, not against Jews.”
But she concedes that teaching about the Holocaust in Palestinian schools is “a problem, an issue”. “Some [Palestinian] teachers refuse to teach the Holocaust as long as Israelis don’t teach the Nakba [the Palestinian "catastrophe" of 1948].”
Perhaps not surprisingly for someone of such radical views, Peled-Elhanan is deeply pessimistic about her country’s future. Change, she says, will only come “when the Americans stop providing us with $1m a day to maintain this regime of occupation and racism and supremacy”.

The chairmen of the congressional group, Tom Lantos of California and John Porter of Illinois, stated that “Nayirah’s” true identity had to be kept secret to protect her family in occupied Kuwait. There was a much better reason for keeping the true identity of “Nayirah” secret. For Nayirah, which was her real first name, was the daughter of Saud Nasir al-Sabal, the Kuwaiti Ambassador to the United States. Where was she in the months of August and September 1990 when Kuwait was invaded, and she supposedly witnessed the atrocities? Her father and family were in Washington and were safe from Iraqi reprisals. In 1982 in his congressional campaign Mr. Lantos was telling his constituents at fund raising rallies that “Israel needed a friend in Congress”. As late as 1995 Congressman Lantos, a Jew born in Hungary, was chastising the French for preparing to deal commercially with Iraq. People who believe American interests have required more friends of America in Congress have been lacking. Not to be outdone by minor parties, the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations affirmed their support for the policies of George Bush. They demanded withdrawal of Iraqi forces from Kuwait and the restoration of the legitimate rulers of Kuwait. These stalwarts also demanded the dismantling of Iraq’s huge arsenal of conventional and chemical weapons as well as its potential for developing nuclear and biological weapons. They wholeheartedly supported the refusal of the Bush administration to link Kuwait with the Palestinian issue. They closed in hoping that American policy toward Saddam Hussein would not be sidetracked by other nations advocating appeasement or other rewards for aggression by Iraq. This heartfelt and important admonition was read into the Congressional Record. No Congressman challenged this group’s lack of interest in casualties that American forces would suffer to achieve this noble goal. Such displays of money which induced patriotism for the war in the Persian Gulf were not limited to conservatives. The public relations firm of Hill and Knowlton, which whored for anybody if paid sufficiently, was hired by the Citizens for a Free Kuwait, a group financed by the government of Kuwait to urge military intervention in the Persian Gulf. A vice president of Hill and Knowlton, Gary Hymel, arranged the perjured testimony by the daughter of the Kuwaiti Ambassador before the congressional committee chaired by Representative Lantos of California. Mr. Hymel told the New York Times that he was aware of the true identity of the girl when she testified. This tale of contrived slaughter of babies by Iraqi soldiers was passed off as authentic when it was known to be a lie. This perjury was instrumental in committing the United States to war. Lack of public outrage has been testimony to the media powers which can suppress any story when they choose. Vice chairman of Hill and Knowlton was Frank Mankiewicz, who was once a worthy of Robert Kennedy. Later in October 1991 Mr. Mankiewicz became a member of a foundation board sponsored by Representative Lantos. The Emir of Kuwait spent his money wisely in the hiring of Hill and Knowlton. The influence of the oil and Israeli lobbies continue to determine American policy in the Middle East to the detriment of the country. Thomas Peter “Tom” Lantos (February 1, 1928 – February 11, 2008)^[1] was a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives from 1981 until his death, representing the northern two-thirds of San Mateo County and a portion of southwest San Francisco. Lantos had announced in early January 2008 that he would not run for reelection because of cancer of the esophagus,^[2]^[3] but died before finishing his term. Lantos was the only Holocaust survivor to have served in the United States Congress.^[4]
In speaking before the House of Representatives after his passing, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi stated that Lantos “devoted his public life to shining a bright light on the dark corners of oppression. . . He used his powerful voice to stir the consciousness of world leaders and the public alike.”^[5] U2 lead singer Bono called him a “prizefighter,” whose stamina would make him go “any amount of rounds, with anyone, anywhere, to protect human rights and common decency.”^[6]
In 2008, after his death, the Congressional Human Rights Caucus, which he founded in 1983, was renamed the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission. Its mission is partly to “to promote, defend and advocate internationally recognized human rights.” In 2011, the Tom Lantos Institute was set up in Budapest to promote tolerance and support minority issues in central and eastern Europe and in the world.^[7]
Early years

World War II

Thomas Peter Lantos (Hungarian pronunciation: [ˈlɒntoʃ ˈtɒmaːʃ ˈpeːtɛr]) was born to a Jewish family in Budapest, Hungary. Even after moving to the United States, his English had a marked Hungarian accent.
Many of his family members were teachers, including an uncle who was a professor at the University of Budapest, and his grandmother who was a high school principal. His life in Hungary would change after Germany invaded Austria in 1938, with the Austrian border just 100 miles from Budapest. Lantos remembered this period and a newspaper headline he read when he was only 10, “Hitler Marches into Austria.” Even at a young age, he understood the significance of this invasion: ^[8]

“I sensed that this historic moment would have a tremendous impact on the lives of Hungarian Jews, my family, and myself.”

Six years later, in March 1944, the German military invaded Hungary and occupied Budapest, its capital. Lantos, then 16, was arrested because he was Jewish and sent to a forced labor camp outside of Budapest. He escaped but was soon caught by the Germans and beaten severely, to be returned to the labor camp. He again escaped but this time made his way back to Budapest, 40 miles away. There, he hid with an aunt in a safe house set up by Raoul Wallenberg, a Swedish diplomat.^[8]
Lantos then joined the anti-Nazi resistance movement and was able to move around freely due to his having blond hair and blue eyes, which to the Nazis were physical signs of Aryanism. As a result, he acted as a courier for the underground movement and delivered food and medicine to Jews living in other safe houses, and where he met his future wife, Annette Tillemann. In January 1945, less than year later, Russian military forces fought door-to-door battles and liberated Hungary from Nazi occupation. However, Lantos, then 17, returned home only to discover that his mother and other family members had all been killed by the Germans, along with 450,000 other Hungarian Jews, during the preceding 10 months of their occupation.^[8] Wallenberg, for his part, was later credited with saving the lives of thousands of other Hungarian Jews.^[9]
Lantos described some of his experiences in the Academy Award winning documentary film, The Last Days (1998), produced by Steven Spielberg‘s Shoah Foundation. In his floor speeches as a congressman, he sometimes referred to himself as one of the few living members of Congress who had fought against fascism. In 1981, Lantos sponsored a bill making Wallenberg an Honorary Citizen of the United States and became a member of the International Raoul Wallenberg Foundation.
In January 2006 he traveled to Hungary and attended a ceremony commemorating the 61st anniversary of the liberation of the Budapest Ghetto. The event was held at the Great Synagogue in Budapest,^[10](photo), today the largest synagogue in Europe.^[11]

Education

In 1946 Lantos enrolled at the University of Budapest. As a result of writing an essay about Franklin D. Roosevelt, he was awarded a scholarship by the Hillel Foundation to study in the United States. He then emigrated to the U.S. and studied economics at University of Washington in Seattle, where he earned a B.A. in 1949 and an M.A. in 1950. He continued his post-graduate education at the University of California, Berkeley, and received a Ph.D in economics in 1953.

Early career

After graduation from Berkeley, he became a professor of economics at San Francisco State University. In subsequent years, he worked as a business consultant and television commentator on subjects of foreign policy. He eventually became a senior advisor to various U.S. Senators and in 1980 was elected to the U.S. Congress, where he remained until his retirement in January 2008.^[8] Recalling his early life, he announced his retirement by stating to Congress, “I will never be able to express fully my profoundly felt gratitude to this great country.”^[8] He died the following month, in February 2008, the only Holocaust survivorever to serve in Congress.

Personal and family life

During the German occupation of Hungary he met Annette Tillemann, a girl whose family escaped to Switzerland. They used Swedish passports issued by Raoul Wallenberg. After Hungary was liberated, she and her family returned to Budapest where she and Lantos met again. They married in 1950 after they emigrated to the U.S. and remained married until his death in 2008.^[12] Tillemann is a cousin of actress Zsa Zsa Gabor, also originally from Budapest.^[13]
Lantos and his wife Annette had two daughters, Annette and Katrina, and 17 grandchildren. His daughter Annette was married to Timber Dick, “an independent businessman in Colorado,”^[14] until his accidental death in 2008.^[15]^[16] His daughter Katrina, who married ambassador and former U.S. Representative from New Hampshire Richard Swett, was a candidate for Congress in New Hampshire. One of Lantos’ grandchildren, Charity Sunshine Tillemann-Dick, is a noted opera singer and activist for organ donation. Lantos considered himself a secular Jew.^[17]

Political career and positions

Lantos made his first run for office in 1980, when he defeated one-term Republican Congressman Bill Royer by 5,700 votes. He never faced another contest nearly that close, and was reelected 13 times.
Lantos earned a reputation in the Congress as a champion for various human rights causes, such as having Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang testify at a congressional hearing, when the company turned over the email records of two Chinese dissidents to the Chinese government, allowing them to be traced and one sentenced to jail.^[18]

Lantos was a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus^[20] and repeatedly called for reforms to the nation’s health-care system, reduction of the national budget deficit and the national debt, repeal of theEconomic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001, and has opposed Social Security privatization efforts. He supported same-sex marriage rights and marijuana for medical use, was a strong proponent ofgun control^[21] and was adamantly pro-choice.^[22]
Lantos was a well-known advocate on behalf of the environment, receiving consistently high ratings from the League of Conservation Voters and other environmental organizations for his legislative record.^[23] His long-standing efforts to protect open space brought thousands of acres under the protection of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, including Mori Point, Sweeney Ridge and — most recently — Rancho Corral de Tierra, which will keep its watersheds and delicate habitats free from development permanently.^[24]^[25] In 2005 he opposed an effort to expand public use of the Farallon Islands, a protected wildlife haven.
Lantos consistently championed local transportation projects that need federal funds and, given his seniority in Congress, proved successful at delivering this support.

Lantos initially supported the Iraq War, but from 2006 onward made increasingly critical statements about the conduct of the war, and as the chairman of the United States House Committee on Foreign Affairs he held 20 oversight hearings on the war in 2007. Lantos served as the chairman of the United States House Committee on Foreign Affairs.
Through its more than 20 years of work, the Congressional Human Rights Caucus^[26] — of which Lantos was co-chair with Representative Frank Wolf — has covered a wide range of human rights issues, including speaking for Christians in Saudi Arabia and Sudan to practice their faith, helping Tibetans to retain their culture and religion in Tibet, and advocating for other minorities worldwide. Lantos’s efforts to protect religious freedom in 2004 resulted in a bill to attempt to stop the spread of anti-semitism.^[27]
Lantos was involved with his colleagues on the International Relations Committee on many decisions that affected other aspects of American foreign policy. Lantos spoke out against waste, fraud and abuse in the multi-billion-dollar U.S. reconstruction program in Iraq, and warned that the U.S. could lose Afghanistan to the Taliban if the Bush administration failed to take decisive action to halt the current decline in political stability there.
Lantos, as the ranking Democrat on the International Relations Committee, tried to disrupt U.S. military aid to Egypt, argued that the Egyptian military had made insufficient efforts to stop the flow of money and weapons across the Egyptian border toHamas in Gaza, and had not contributed troops to internationally-supported peacekeeping efforts in Afghanistan and elsewhere. Lantos was a strong advocate for Israel.

1991 Gulf War

War in Iraq

On October 4, 2002, Lantos led a narrow majority of Democrats on the House International Relations Committee to a successful vote in support of the Resolution for the Use of Force, seeking the approval of the United Nations and under the condition that President George W. Bush would allow UN weapons inspectors to finish their work and that Bush would need to return to Congress for an actual declaration of war before invading Iraq. The resolution later passed the House and the Senate with a total of 373 members of Congress supporting it. “The train is now on its way,” said Lantos after his — and Bush’s — victory.^[31] In later hearings on the war, Lantos continued his enthusiastic support. At one point he was confronted by witnesses who questioned the likelihood of enthusiastic Baghdadis welcoming the invading Americans; Lantos called this a kind of racism, to suggest the Iraqis might be so ungrateful.
Starting in early 2006, Lantos distanced himself from the Bush Administration‘s Iraq policy, making critical statements at hearings, on the House floor and in published media interviews about the conduct of the war. During hearings of the House International Relations Committee, where he was then the ranking member, Lantos repeatedly praised the investigative work of the office of the Special Inspector of Iraq Reconstruction General Stuart Bowen, which uncovered evidence of waste, fraud and abuse in the use of U.S. taxpayer dollars intended to help secure and rebuild Iraq.
Lantos was an immediate and consistent critic of the troop surge advocated by President Bush. On the night in January 2007 that Bush announced his plan, Lantos responded, “I oppose the so-called surge that constitutes the centerpiece of the President’s plan. Our efforts in Iraq are a mess, and throwing in more troops will not improve it.” And during a joint House hearing on September 10, 2007, featuring General David Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker, Lantos said,

The Administration’s myopic policies in Iraq have created a fiasco. Is it any wonder that on the subject of Iraq, more and more Americans have little confidence in this Administration? We can not take ANY of this Administration’s assertions on Iraq at face value anymore, and no amount of charts or statistics will improve its credibility. This is not a knock on you, General Petraeus, or on you, Ambassador Crocker. But the fact remains, gentlemen, that the Administration has sent you here today to convince the members of these two Committees and the Congress that victory is at hand. With all due respect to you, I must say … I don’t buy it.

At the same hearing, Lantos drew comparisons between some of the current U.S. activities in Iraq to U.S. support two decades ago of Islamic militants in Afghanistan:

America should not be in the business of arming, training and funding both sides of a religious civil war in Iraq. Did the Administration learn nothing from our country’s actions in Afghanistan two decades ago, when by supporting Islamist militants against the Soviet Union, we helped pave the way for the rise of the Taliban? Why are we now repeating the short-sighted patterns of the past?^[32]

Tibet

As co-founder of the Congressional Human Rights Caucus in 2006 and as Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Lantos would “stir the consciousness of world leaders and the public alike,” according to Representative Nancy Pelosi. She adds: “Wherever there was injustice or oppression, he used his expertise and moral authority to put the United States on the side of justice and human rights.”^[33]
In 2007, in his effort to help the people of China and Tibet, he presented the Dalai Lama with the Congressional Gold Medal. He also worked to help the people of Burma by asking for the release of Aung San Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize winner held under house arrest for almost 15 years until her release in November 2010.^[33]

Darfur

On April 28, 2006, Lantos and four other Democratic U.S. Representatives (Sheila Jackson Lee, Jim McGovern, Jim Moran, and John Olver), along with six other activists, took part in a civil disobedience action in front of the Sudanese embassy in Washington, D.C. They were protesting the role of the Sudanese government in carrying outgenocide in the Darfur conflict and were arrested for disorderly conduct.^[34] Lantos proclaimed, “We have been calling on the civilized world to stand up and to say, ‘Enough,’ The slaughter of the people of Darfur must end.”^[33]

Hungarian minorities

Tom Lantos stood up for the rights of Hungarian minorities several times^[35]^[36] as a member of the US House of Representatives. In a 2007 letter he asked Robert Fico, the Prime Minister of Slovakia to distance themselves from the Beneš decrees, a reasonable process in the Hedvig Malina case, and to treat members of the Hungarian minority as equal.^[37]^[38] He indirectly blamed the Slovak government for ethnically motivated attacks on Hungarians because the country’s governing coalition included ultra-nationalist parties.^[39]
The American Hungarian Federation recognized Congressman Lantos for his “Leadership in Support of Democracy, Human Rights and Minority Rights in Central and Eastern Europe,” awarding him the organization’s highest award, the “Col. Commandant Michael Kovats Medal of Freedom,” at the October 19, 2005, Congressional Reception commemorating the 49th Anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution.^[40]

Lebanon

On August 27, 2006, at the Israeli Foreign Ministry building in Israel, Lantos said he would block a foreign aid package promised by President George W. Bush to Lebanon until Beirut agrees to the deployment of international troops on the border with Syria and Lebanon takes control of its borders with Syria to prevent arms smuggling to Hezbollah guerrillas.^[41]

Morocco and Western Sahara

Lantos supported Morocco‘s demand to gain sovereignty over Western Sahara, and criticized the Polisario Front, which demands independence for the disputed region. In 2007, he backed Morocco’s proposal to make the region autonomous under Moroccan rule, saying: “I urge the leadership of the Polisario to realize that they will never again get such a good deal for the population they purport to represent.”^[42]

Death and legacy

On January 2, 2008, after having been diagnosed with esophageal cancer, Lantos announced he would not run for a 15th term in the House but planned to complete his final term, and thanked Congress:

It is only in the United States that a penniless survivor of the Holocaust and a fighter in the anti-Nazi underground could have received an education, raised a family, and had the privilege of serving the last three decades of his life as a Member of Congress. I will never be able to express fully my profoundly felt gratitude to this great country.”^[43]^[44]

Lantos died of complications from esophageal cancer on February 11, 2008, before finishing his term. A special election was held to fill his seat on April 8, 2008 and was won by former State Senator Jackie Speier, whom Lantos had endorsed as his successor.^[45] Shortly after his death, Roy Blunt, the House Republican Whip, stated that “Chairman Lantos will be remembered as a man of uncommon integrity and sincere moral conviction — and a public servant who never wavered in his pursuit of a better, freer and more religiously tolerant world.”^[46]
A memorial service was held for Lantos on February 14, 2008 at Statuary Hall in the Capitol. Speakers included Senator Joe Biden, Bono of U2, Rep. Steny Hoyer, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Israeliforeign minister Tzipi Livni, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Rep. Christopher Shays, Elie Wiesel, and his grandson, Tomicah Tillemann, speechwriter for current Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.^[47]
On June 19, 2008, President George W. Bush posthumously awarded Lantos the Medal of Freedom. In a ceremony at the White House, Bush stated “We miss his vigorous defense of human rights and his powerful witness for the cause of human freedom. For a lifetime of leadership, for his commitment to liberty, and for his devoted service to his adopted nation, I am proud to award the Presidential Medal of Freedom, posthumously, to Tom Lantos, and proud that his loving wife Annette will receive the award on behalf of his family.”^[48] That same year, the Congressional Human Rights Caucus, which he founded in 1983, was renamed the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission. Its mission is partly to “to promote, defend and advocate internationally recognized human rights.”
The first Lantos Human Rights Prize, named in the congressman’s memory, was presented to the 14th Dalai Lama in 2009.^[49]
In 2011, the Tom Lantos Institute was set up in Budapest to promote tolerance and support minority issues in central and eastern Europe and in the world.^[7] A the opening ceremonies in June, 2011, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton spoke to the Hungarian Parliament:

Now when Tom grew up here in this country that he loved so much, the only debate that mattered was the one between freedom and fascism, and then between freedom and communism. Tom believed that in our country there were partisan political differences, of course, between Republicans and Democrats or between a President Reagan and a President Clinton, just to pick one. (Laughter.) But Tom always believed that regardless of our political party, we were fundamentally on the same side. We were for freedom. We were for democracy. And that through debate, sometimes contested, we would keep working toward what our founders set as the goal, a more perfect union.^[50]

Controversies

During a 1996 Congressional inquiry into the “Filegate” scandal, Lantos told witness Craig Livingstone that “with an infinitely more distinguished public record than yours, Admiral Boorda committed suicide when he may have committed a minor mistake.” Boorda, the Chief of Naval Operations, had taken his own life after his right to wear Combat V decorations had been questioned. Lantos was criticized by some (including fellow Congressman Joe Scarborough) who interpreted the remark as a suggestion that Livingstone too should kill himself.^[53] Craig Livingstone forgave Lantos for his remark by stating to the gallery, “He (Lantos) obviously learned much from the Nazis and speaks like them today.”^{[citation needed]}
On May 3, 2000, Lantos was involved in an automobile accident while driving on Capitol Hill. Lantos drove over a young boy’s foot and then failed to stop his vehicle. He was later fined over the incident for inattentive driving.^[54]
In 2002, Lantos, who was on the House Committee on International Affairs, took Colette Avital, a Labor Party member of the Israeli Knesset, by the hand and, according to Ha’aretz, tried to reassure her with these words: “My dear Colette, don’t worry. You won’t have any problem with Saddam. We’ll be rid of the bastard soon enough. And in his place we’ll install a pro-Western dictator, who will be good for us and for you.”^[55]He later denied saying this, but Avital confirmed it, according to Ben Terrall, an adviser to Maad H. Abu-Ghazalah, a Libertarian Party candidate who ran against Lantos that year.^[56]
In June 2007, Lantos called former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder a “political prostitute” at the dedication ceremony of the Victims of Communism Memorial, which caused a political backlash from theGerman government. Lantos was referring to Schröder’s ties to energy business in Russia, and remarked that this appellation would offend prostitutes.^[57]
In October 2007, Dutch parliament members said Lantos insulted them while discussing the War on Terror by stating that the Netherlands had to help the United States because it liberated them in World War II, while adding that “Europe was not as outraged by Auschwitz as by Guantanamo Bay.”^[58]

Israel is suing a group of Bedouin in the Negev desert for the costs of demolishing their village each time they rebuild it.
The claim for more than $500,000 in damages was lodged at an Israeli court on Tuesday.
Israel’s justice ministry says the aim is to “maintain the rule of law and the public purse”.
The Bedouin say they will continue to reconstruct their homes in al-Araqib, to which they claim historic rights.
The Israeli state is the registered owner of the land to the south of the Negev city of Rahat.
The Bedouin say they have repeatedly asked for planning permits for their makeshift homes but they have been refused. The Israeli authorities say the land is reserved for agricultural use.
Last July, an eviction order was issued and Israeli security forces moved in to destroy 45 homes, animal pens and other structures.
Since then the Israeli authorities have demolished structures in al-Araqib more than 20 times. Each time, the Bedouin return and rebuild.
Bedouin defianceIsrael’s justice ministry says the defendants have not respected legal rulings and continue to build illegally.
In a long statement it said the civil lawsuit was launched to reclaim the “heavy costs to the state” of demolitions – including the use of heavy equipment and police security.
The case brought by the Southern District Prosecution is directed at 34 people.
“What’s happening is political at the end of the day,” a Bedouin spokesman, Awad Abu Freih, told the BBC. “They want to scare us in order to prevent us from rebuilding. They want to make Araqib an example to others.
“But that will never happen. This court case will not deter us. We are going to rebuild again,” he said.
Some 300 people are said to live in al-Araqib, about half of them children.
Rights groups have previously called for the Israeli government to stop the demolitions of homes of Bedouin citizens.
Human Rights Watch says that nearly 90,000 Palestinian Arab Bedouins in the Negev region of southern Israel live in dozens of unrecognised towns and villages.

It was an Arab legislator who made the most telling comment to the Israeli parliament last week as it passed the boycott law, which outlaws calls to boycott Israel or its settlements in the occupied territories. Ahmed Tibi asked: “What is a peace activist or Palestinian allowed to do to oppose the occupation? Is there anything you agree to?”
The boycott law is the latest in a series of ever-more draconian laws being introduced by the far-right. The legislation’s goal is to intimidate those Israeli citizens, Jews and Palestinians, who have yet to bow down before the majority-rule mob.
Look out in the coming days and weeks for a bill to block the work of Israeli human rights organisations trying to protect Palestinians in the occupied territories from abuses by the Israeli army and settlers; and a draft law investing a parliamentary committee, headed by the far-right, with the power to veto appointments to the supreme court. The court is the only, and already enfeebled, bulwark against the right’s absolute ascendancy.
The boycott law, backed by Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, marks a watershed in this legislative assault in two respects.
First, it knocks out the keystone of any democratic system: the right to free speech. The new law makes it illegal for Israelis and Palestinians to advocate a non-violent political programme — boycott — to counter the ever-growing power of the half a million Jewish settlers living on stolen Palestinian land.
As the Israeli commentator Gideon Levy observed, the floodgates are now open: “Tomorrow it will be forbidden to call for an end to the occupation [or for] brotherhood between Jews and Arabs.”
Equally of concern is that the law creates a new type of civil, rather than criminal, offence. The state will not be initiating prosecutions. Instead, the job of enforcing the boycott law is being outsourced to the settlers and their lawyers. Anyone backing a boycott can be sued for compensation by the settlers themselves, who — again uniquely — need not prove they suffered actual harm.
Under this law, opponents of the occupation will not even be dignified with jail sentences and the chance to become prisoners of conscience. Rather, they will be quietly bankrupted in private actions, their assets seized either to cover legal costs or as punitive damages.
Human rights lawyers point out that there is no law like this anywhere in the democratic world. Even Eyal Yinon, the naturally conservative legal adviser to the parliament, assessed the law’s aim as stopping a “discussion that has been at the heart of political debate in Israel for more than 40 years”. But more than half of Israelis back it, with only 31 per cent opposed.
The delusional, self-pitying worldview that spawned the boycott law was neatly illustrated this month in a short video “ad” that is supported, and possibly financed, by Israel’s hasbara, or propaganda, ministry. Fittingly, it is set in a psychiatrist’s office.
A young, traumatised woman deciphers the images concealed in the famous Rorschach test. As she is shown the ink-splodges, her panic and anger grow. Gradually, we come to realise, she represents vulnerable modern Israel, abandoned by friends and still in profound shock at the attack on her navy’s commandos by the “terrorist” passengers aboard last year’s aid flotilla to Gaza.
Immune to reality — that the ships were trying to break Israel’s punitive siege of Gaza, that the commandos illegally boarded the ships in international waters, and that they shot dead nine activists execution-style — Miss Israel tearfully recounts that the world is “forever trying to torment and harm [us] for no reason”. Finally she storms out, saying: “What do you want – for [Israel] to disappear off the map?”
The video — released under the banner “Stop the provocation against Israel” — was part of a campaign to discredit the recent follow-up flotilla from Greece. The aid mission was abandoned after Greek authorities, under Israeli pressure, refused to let the convoy sail for Gaza.
Israel’s siege mentality asserted itself again days later as international activists staged another show of solidarity — this one nicknamed the “flytilla”. Hundreds tried to fly to Israel on the same day, declaring their intention to travel to the West Bank. The goal was to highlight that Israel both controls and severely restricts access to the occupied territories and to Palestinians.
Proving precisely the protesters’ point, Israel threatened airlines with retaliation if they carried the activists and it massed hundreds of soldiers at Ben Gurion airport to greet arrivals. Some 150 peaceful protesters who reached Israel were arrested moments after landing.
Echoing the deranged sentiments of the woman in the video, Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, denounced the various flotillas as “denying Israel’s right to exist” and a threat to its security.
In reality, however, the surge in flotilla activity reflects not an attack on Israel but a growing appreciation by international groups that Israel is successfully sealing off from the world the small areas of the occupied territories left to Palestinians. The flotillas are a rebellion against the Palestinians’ rapid ghettoisation.
Although Netanyahu’s comments sound delusional, there may be a method to the madness of measures like the boycott law and the hysterical overreaction to the flotillas.
These initiatives, as Tibi points out, leave no room for non-violent opposition to the occupation. Arundhati Roy, the award-winning Indian writer, has noted that non-violence is essentially “a piece of theatre. [It] needs an audience. What can you do when you have no audience?”
Netanyahu and the Israeli right understand this point. They are carefully dismantling every platform on which dissident Israelis, Palestinians and international activists hope to stage their protests. They are making it impossible to organise joint peaceful and non-violent resistance, whether in the form of boycotts or solidarity visits. The only way being left open is violence.
Is this what the Israeli right wants, believing both that it will confirm to Israelis’ their paranoid fantasies as well as offering a justification to the world for entrenching the occupation?
Netanyahu appears to believe that, by generating the very terror he claims to be trying to defeat, he can safeguard the legitimacy of the Jewish state — and destroy any hope of a Palestinian state being created.

In a later exchange Ailes suggests that after he has created a violent incident that can be placed at the feet of Islam and Iran, that Israeli forces be the first to invade Iran. But Murdoch quips, “Walee says he’d prefer American boots be filled with American feet.” Ailes writes apropos of the Park51 Islamic Center project that it provides the perfect catalyst to “go to war with Iran.” He goes on to express admiration for Truman era propagandist Robert Lovett. The Assassinated Press has acquired several memos from an anonymous source at Fox News which reveal a blueprint for triggering a violent response from the Muslim world. The memos which take place between Rupert Murdoch and Roger Ailes over several days further discuss how to exploit the current canard over the Park51 Project and how to best promote bigotry and divisiveness.
The first goal is to of foment some violent act by Muslims no matter how small or even trumped up. This preferably should be an act which can pinned on Iran and which will discredit the Obama administration. After the war in Iran has started, the so-called mosque project will allowed to go forward.

The Israeli parliament has temporarily suspended an Israeli-Arab politician who participated in the Gaza-bound flotilla last year that was intercepted by Israel in a bungled assault that left nine pro-Palestinian activists dead.
Civil rights groups condemned the controversial sanction against Haneen Zoabi, an MP with the Balad Party. Her suspension came as a lone French yacht tried to run Israel’s blockade of Gaza as the sole representative of a much larger convoy that had hoped to sail weeks ago but has been grounded by the authorities in Greece.
The French-flagged Dignite – Al Karama, which sailed from Greece after naming Egypt as its destination, expects to reach Gaza’s territorial waters around midday today in an attempt to refocus international attention on Israel’s four-year blockade of the tiny Palestinian enclave. Activists on board the vessel, which is carrying 17 passengers, among them a French politician, said they were bringing a message of “peace and love and hope”.
The effort is likely to be more symbolic than effective as Israeli troops are primed to prevent any ship from entering the sea around Gaza. Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s hawkish Prime Minister, has repeatedly warned that the Jewish State will use force to repel any attempt to run the blockade.
Last year, Israeli commandoes mounted a deadly raid on the Mavi Marmara, the lead ship of a Gaza-bound aid convoy, that left nine Turkish activists dead, provoking international outrage and badly damaging Israel’s relations with Turkey, its erstwhile ally.
Ms Zoabi, a vociferous critic of Israeli policies towards the Palestinians, was a passenger on the Mavi Marmara, attracting fury in Israel. She was branded a traitor by colleagues and stripped of some parliamentary privileges. But the latest move to sanction her demonstrates the extent to which the flotilla affair still rankles in Israel. The Knesset’s ethics committee voted to bar Ms Zoabi from parliamentary debates until the current session ends next month, declaring that her actions had “harmed national security and were inconsistent with the legitimate conduct of a lawmaker”.
The committee accused her of co-operating with IHH, the Turkish charity that was the driving force of the flotilla, with links to Hamas, the militant Islamist group in charge of Gaza.
Israel regards Hamas as a terrorist group, and imposed its blockade in part to weaken it and prevent arms smuggling, but critics say the policy, which has devastated Gaza’s economy and effectively imprisoned its 1.6 million inhabitants, has failed.
Ms Zoabi slammed the committee’s decision, saying she had taken part in the flotilla “as part of a struggle that is humanitarian, moral and politically just in defence of a besieged people”.
“The decision to keep me away from discussions in the Knesset is a political decision and a reflection of the right-wing majority,” she told Agence France Presse.
